Next to Normal is Next to Perfection

I first saw Next to Normal with the original cast members in New York in 2009. It is a musical about a nuclear family with a bipolar mom dealing with her efforts to keep her family together while going through the treatments. Not your typical musical material, right? The New York Times called it “a brave, breathtaking musical… It is much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical.” The musical won 3 Tony Awards in 2009, Best Actress (Alice Ripley), Best Original Score (over Elton John’s Billy Elliot!), and Best Orchestration. Recently at Sunday brunch in the Castro squeezed in between the tables of mimosas and Bloody Marys, I spied at least 5 top of the line $1000 Bugaboo strollers in the restaurant surrounded by cooing daddies (No..not that type) and mommies feeding organic soymilk formula to their litte darlings. I was also reminded of a MTF lesbian acquaintance of mine who just had a baby with her wife. She had frozen her sperm before her sexual reassignment surgery which they used to impregnate her wife who gave birth to gayby twins. Continue reading
