Lesbian Porn-sumption

Me: How often do you watch porn?
Lesbian Friend: Never really. I watched that one I lent you because I liked the filmmaker.
Me: So you don’t watch porn when you masturbate?
Lesbian Friend: No. I watch Xena!

Last week I blogged about how a 3D softcore porn took over the Hong Kong box office. Since then porn has become a somewhat popular topic among me and my Lebanese lesbian friends. Not surprisingly, a good amount of them don’t really watch porn. And those who do opt for straight or even gay porn INSTEAD OF lesbian porn because of a variety of reasons and no, one of them is not penis envy. Although it is interesting to note that in their recent research study on online sexual behavior, neuroscientists Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam found overwhelming evidence behind the fact that “men search for penises almost as often as they search for vaginas. There’s about a thousand heterosexual sites dedicated to large penises, and large penises are a category of erotica in all the major porn video sites.” Wow straight men very much like looking at penises as gay men. Who really envies a penis now, huh Mr. Freud?

To begin with, women in general don’t watch as much porn as men even though scientifically it has been proven that women are just as aroused by erotic images as men physically. But psychologically, as this article suggests, women have been told that they shouldn’t be turned on by porn by both sides of the spectrum: conservatives who deem any woman with a sexual appetite a deviant and feminists who see porn as degrading and exploitation. And indeed, women are turned off by porn when certain imagery makes them uncomfortable like crude, disempowering sex acts. Let’s face it, most women in porn do NOT look like they are enjoying themselves. How can women who are watching them do?

But of course there is also a lot of straight porn in which women are not treated like sex slaves that both straight and queer women do enjoy. Just as much as they enjoy gay porn. Much discussions have been devoted to why some lesbians like gay porn, especially since The Kids Are Alright hit theaters last year. The bottom line is that women, queer or straight, are just as into porn as their male counterparts as long as the actors are genuinely enjoying themselves and having fun.

Then how come lesbians who do enjoy porn don’t watch lesbian porn? Why do they prefer to use their vibrators while watching Xena: The Warrior Princess or The L Word (Ok some may argue that their sex scenes are softporn-ish but come on!)?

The obvious reason is the serious lack of accessible authentic lesbian porn out there. By “authentic” I mean not your majority of pseudo lesbian porn in which two extremely femme girls with fingernails long enough to divide a pizza roll around playing with various sex toys making the god-awful fake moaning noise (Yes, noise) that panders to the typical straight male fantasy. Yes, there is increasingly more lesbian porn made for and by queer women but not everyone lives next to a Good Vibration or believes in an erotic site that claims to be created by a woman or can afford to fork out $35.00 a month (Please verify your age before you click on those links.) So they settle for the mostly free, one-click-away straight or gay male porn. Even a library is offering free porn nowadays for crying out loud! And of course the more lesbians don’t pay for real lesbo porn, the less willing are people to produce it. So the vicious cycle continues.

In the end, women, gay or straight, are suckers for romance. In the same study done by Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam, it states that “the dominant modes of erotica for women are character-driven stories of romance and sexuality. The most popular erotic site for women is fanfiction.net.” That explains why some lesbians are more turned on by reading Xena and Gabrielle fan fiction or watching Bette and Tina’s steamy but not too revealing sex scenes than watching a completely naked random chick going down on another.

Ok, shush! Xena is on.

  1. While this is clearly a blog about and for queerious kind of people, I thought I’d still comment. As a straight male, I admit that I’m guilty of getting turned on by “lesbian” porn. But I’ll take amateur, real looking lesbians over porn star looking ones with fake boobs and scary nails. But the reasons for why I enjoy watching “lesbians” get it on are probably many–some of which I’m probably not aware of yet–but here are the top reasons I can think of:
    1) I enjoy the sight of naked women, and while it’s a cliché, two naked women together doing sexual things IS flippin awesome.
    2) I love cunnilingus and the sight of pussy, so seeing this act performed by a woman is extremely hot. Why not just watch a man go down on a woman? Because I’m not that man. And I’m not bisexual or interested in seeing a dude f@#king. So, I guess seeing a guy go down on a woman turns me off because it’s not me. Well, no porn I watch involves me performing, but since I have a hard time replacing in my mind some dude’s mouth with my mouth I’d rather just see another girl doing the job.
    3) I love seeing women loving other women. I think women can often be very cruel and cutthroat with other women, especially over jealousy issues. So much shit talking goes on between women, and sooo much petty competition. Guys are dicks to each other too, but in MY personal experience it’s not in the same back-stabbing ways. But I love seeing women loving each other and when they take it to the next, more intimate level, I find that rad.
So, anyway, critique these comments as chauvinistic, or whathaveyou, but I’m just one straight male making a case for why “lesbian” porn is hot. The next straight dude, or gay dude, may have his own reasons that don’t include these. But I’m glad warrior princesses get ya off if “lesbian” porn doesn’t. Hopefully lesbians can find better porn that fits their needs. We all need something. And it doesn’t always need to be psychologically figured out.

  2. You can totally be straight and queer. Being queer is a cultural and political sensibility beyond being LGBT…
